SNMP

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is part of the internet protocols which where defined by the IETF.

The management and control of network compounds which predominantly derive from LAN divisions (Routers, Servers, Switches etc.) is realized by this protocol. SNMP transfers and modifies management- and alarm information. In LANs a special SNMP-Management-Server can collect and analyse these management information in order to supply the network administrator with the most important information about incidents concerning his LAN.

Network management information is deposed in the Management Information Base (MIB). This information is mainly declared throughout the Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1). Furthermore there are two additional data formats: Structure of Management Information (SMI) and Basic encoding Rules (BER).
