GPS

The Global Positioning System is a satellite-based radio positioning, navigation, and time-transfer system. Theoretically three satellites are sufficient to find out an exact location and its height. Practically, however, most of the GPS-receivers have no source of time which is precise enough for correct runtime calculations. Therefore a fourth satellite that provides such a signal is strictly necessary.

A constant contact for the GPS-Users is being guaranteed by 24 satellites that surround the earth in periods of 12 hours in an elevation of about 12.500 miles. In each case four satellites are placed on the same orbit which is tilted 55 degrees from the equator level. Additionally, the GPS signals are also capable of determining the velocity of an object. With the help of the relative movement of the receivers in relation to the satellites location and movement, the GPS is able to compare the signal displacement of the objects to the known velocity of the satellites and thereby calculate the exact speed of the receivers. The main parts of the GPS are the Standard Positioning Service (SPS) and the Precise Positioning Service (PPS). While PPS is encrypted and only available for authorized (military) users, SPS has been made available to the general public.

Meinbergs GPS receivers use a self developed 12-channel receiver which has been especially engineered for time determination and frequency generation. By using a converter for antennas, cable lengths of up to 700 m without amplification belong into the spectrum of possibility.

Some of Meinbergs GPS Receivers are e.g.:
LANTIME M1000: High End NTP Time Server with integrated GPS radio clock
IMS-GPS: Clock Module with GPS Satellite Receiver
GPS165: Satellite Receiver with integrated time code generator (DIN Mounting Rail)
